My name is Alex Villarreal. I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) based in Austin, Texas. I received my Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from St. Edward’s University in 2018. I began my work in community mental health in 2016 before opening up my private practice in June of 2020.
My clinical work focuses on guiding clients through healing from complex trauma, family of origin issues, complicated grief/loss, sexual abuse and/or negative religious experiences. Other areas of focus include stress-management, navigating relationships, self-esteem, sexuality or gender issues, complex family dynamics and mood disorders.
I have worked with community mental health in the non-profit sector, focusing on crisis services, criminal justice/mental health initiatives and leadership of clinical programs. Some of my work has included supervision and career development of mental health providers, provision of mental health training to law enforcement, and community-based crisis intervention.
IFS (Internal Family Systems) is the primary model I use to support clients in the healing process. I also incorporate EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), IPNB (Interpersonal Neurobiology) and Sandtray techniques. I’m experiential and collaborative in my approach and adapt therapy to individual goals and needs. I often help clients learn about and connect with their nervous systems, as trauma is often held in the body.
Healing looks different for everyone. I may be a good fit for someone who is okay with gentle challenging, as I believe this important part of the clinical work helps clients reach their goals and live more fulfilling lives. I invite you to connect with me for a free consultation to see if we are a good fit.
